Lynn Matsuoka has spent 40 years with the world of Sumo, documenting their life and pageantry in drawings and paintings on location, at practice, the tournaments, and on the road.
The great, former Grand Champion Chiyonofuji invited the artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Sumo Museum, and a reproduction of the artist’s painting ‘Sleeping Chiyo’ is in the collection of the Sumo Museum in Tokyo.
The legendary designer Milton Glaser describes Lynn Matsuoka as “probably the greatest living reportage artist”. She has been a color commentator on the NHK world-wide TV Sumo coverage for 15 years, and her first book, “The Scent of Binsuke” was published in 1981. Matsuoka is currently working on a memoir of her decades in Japan working with SUMO and KABUKI.
CNN reported: Few artists so completely dominate their field that their name becomes synonymous with the subject matter, but Lynn Matsuoka has succeeded in capturing the essence of Sumo and has won a loyal following along the way.
